Maj. Robert Liberati to Leave Post as Dist. 1 Commander of PGPD

He will be succeeded by Hector Velez, the current assistant commander of the Bureau of Patrol.

After only nine months on the job, the Prince George's County Police Department's Maj. Robert Liberati will be leaving his post as District 1 Commander.

Liberati, who was installed as Dist. 1 Commander last May by then-Chief of Police Roberto Hylton, will be transferring to the department's forensic services division.  This will be his last week on the job.

"It’s sad for me to leave," said Liberati. He added that the biggest projects of his tenure as Dist. 1 Commander were to ready the town for the school year, as well as deal with some of the area's immigration issues, both of which he feels he made headway on.

Liberati will be succeeded by Hector Velez, who is currently the department's assistant commander of the Bureau of Patrol. Liberati said one major reason for the transfer is that, unlike Liberati, Velez speaks fluent Spanish.

"A lot of the community around here ... is very Hispanic," Liberati said. "Velez will provide a dimension that I cannot."
