Residents Temporarily Evacuated From High Rises Tuesday Due to Gas Line Break

Fire Chief said utility spots were not properly marked where digging was going on.

Updated 12:51 p.m.: Residents are permitted back into their apartments at this time.

Updated 12:45 p.m.: The incident at 6200 Westchester Park Drive is confirmed to be a gas leak. Branchville Fire Company  said that after two hours of work, the gas line has been clamped.

Updated 12:37 p.m.: The College Park Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page posted that Truck 12 and Ambulance 129 are currently involved in a large outside gas leak with evacuation at 6200 Westchester Park Drive.

Updated 12:27 p.m.: Emergency personnel are not releasing official information on the situation at this time.

Brandon Braithwaite, 22, said that just before 11 a.m., maintenance personnel knocked on his door on the eighth floor of the high rise, instructing him to leave the building. He said he was also instructed to not get into his car.

Update 12:18 p.m.: More than seven fire trucks from a handful of departments have reported to the scene at 6200 Westchester Park Drive, where residents of the high-rise apartments have been evacuated. Gasoline can be smelled from the parking lot, according to a Patch reporter.
