After Beating N.C. State, UMd. Takes on Duke...Again

University police say they are prepared for whatever happens.

You read it right. After an exciting win Thursday night against N.C. State, the Maryland men's basketball team will be taking on Duke for the third time this year, this time in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Friday night's game will take place at Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina, meaning there will be no bonfire or other university planned festivities, said University Police Chief David Mitchell. However, that doesn't mean police won't be taking the same precautions they do for any other Duke game.

A contigent from the Maryland State Police and the Prince George's County Police will be present, Mitchell said, and the UMd. Department of Public Safety will have all hands on deck.

"There's no reason to believe there will be any problems to speak of, but we’re certainly prepared for any problems that may occur," Mitchell said.

The last Duke game, which was played at the Comcast Center on Feb.2, resulted in no arrests, injuries or incidents of any sort, Mitchell said.

Nevertheless, police will be out in force, making their presence known by periodically checking in at all of the area's bars.

"Bar owners pretty much have this down pat," Mitchell said. "We'll just be stopping in, waving hello, saying 'Go Terps.'

"We want people to see us in our uniform of the day, just to remind them that we’re here."
