Prince George’s County Public Schools Recognized for Innovative Use of Digital Content

Discovery Education recognized Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) over the weekend for its innovative use of digital content to engage students in learning and improve achievement.

Discovery Education recognized Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) over the weekend for its innovative use of digital content to engage students in learning and improve achievement. PGCPS recently reached “two million views” of Discovery Education’s digital content. In recognition, Discovery Education representatives presented a Visionary District award to Superintendent Dr. William Hite during the 2011 Powering Up with Technology conference.

“Technology has transformed the way we educate students in Prince George’s County by integrating digital content into core subject areas,” said Dr. Hite. “I thank Discovery Education for this honor, which I accept on behalf of our teachers, administrators and students. We could not do the hard work of preparing our students to compete with their tech-savvy peers without access to 21st century learning tools.”

In recent years, PGCPS has enhanced the use of streaming video, podcasts, online textbooks and curriculum-related web resources. All schools in the district have access to Discovery Education resources.

“PGCPS is leading the national shift to utilize digital content in the classroom to improve student engagement and achievement,” said Alex Morrison of Discovery Education. “The district is one of only seven districts nationwide to reach ‘two million views’ of Discovery Education’s digital content. We are proud to recognize PGCPS and Dr. William Hite with a Visionary District award.”

Discovery Education’s digital content, which is available in more than half of all U.S. schools, captures the minds and imaginations of students by tapping into their natural curiosity and desire to learn. Through the service, teachers and students have access to a library of 150,000 resources that cover all curriculum areas and are aligned to state academic and testing standards. Designed to address multiple learning styles, Discovery Education’s digital content is scientifically shown to improve student achievement.

Prince George's has always been on the cutting edge of technolgy and I still have a copy of the beta- test report that Surrattsville High school staff completed on the "possible" uses for the internet in school environments. We were the lead county in Maryland in the '80's, with many gifted "techies" who were empowered in their efforts by Dr. John Murphy, PGCPS superintendent. Nice to see that Dr. Hite is continuiing this legacy and that PGCPS is acquiring some richly deserved commendations!
