Paul Farmer

Paul Farmer is coming to The University of Maryland on February 4th! He will be lecturing from 6-7:30 pm in The Hoff Theater in The Stamp Student Union. The lecture is open to the general public and is free admission on a first come basis.

Medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer is the Kolokotrones University Professor; Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School; and a founding director of Partners In Health (PIH), an international non-profit organization that provides direct health care services and undertakes research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. Dr. Farmer is widely known for delivering high-quality health care in resource-poor settings, beginning in Haiti.

In addition, he is Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, and served for ten years as medical director of a charity hospital, L’Hôpital Bon Sauveur, in rural Haiti. From 2009 to 2012, Dr. Farmer served as the United Nations Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti, under Special Envoy Bill Clinton. In December 2012, he was named the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Community Based Medicine and Lessons From Haiti. He has received multiple prestigious awards and written over 10 books, including; To Repair the World: Paul Farmer Speaks to the Next Generation.
