Give Back At The Tolls: Food Drive Set For Sept. 23-27
You may donate non-perishable items at select Maryland toll plazas next week.
Know that feeling where you pay that new rate at the tolls, but you still feel generous and want to give more?
No? Me either.
But, you can make your toll experience a valuable one, as toll plazas around Maryland will double as food drive depositories next week as part of a canned food drive.
The initiative will run from 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. between Sept. 23 and Sept. 27. Those wishing to donate should use the right lane and follow direction from staff, as toll booth collectors are unable to accept donations in the lanes.
Toll plazas participating include:
- Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895)
- Forth McHenry Tunnel (I-95)
- Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695)
- Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (U.S. Route 40)
- Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (U.S. Route 301)
- William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge (U.S. Routes 50/301)
According to a flier from the Maryland Transportation Authority and the Maryland Food Bank, the items most needed include: "canned meat, ham, tuna & chicken; peanut butter; macaroni & cheese; canned stews; salmon & sardines; nuts & seeds; dried canned beans; oatmeal; breakfast cereal; rice & rice cakes; pasta; canned fruits & juices; canned vegetables; canned soup; evaporated milk; powdered milk; infant formula; pudding; diapers; toilet paper; plastic/paper cups & plates."
