MARYLAND PIRG HOSTS LITTER CLEANUP IN SUPPORT OF BOTTLE BILL

Maryland PIRG volunteers and community members will
host litter cleanup to illustrate the problem of recyclable bottle litter. There will be
a press briefing after the cleanup. The event is part
of Maryland PIRG’s Don’t Trash Maryland Campaign.

Every year 3 billion bottles and
cans are trashed instead of recycled in Maryland, and our recycling rate is
BELOW the national average. This means more pollution from landfills and
incineration and more litter. The bottle bill is a 5-cent redeemable deposit on bottles and
cans.
The 10 states that have one have container
recycling rates triple Maryland’s and they’ve all seen major reductions in
litter.

In attendance and speaking will be Brian
Frosh, Maryland State Senator; Walter
Lee James, Jr., Mayor of Bladensburg; and Emily
Scarr, Maryland PIRG State Advocate.
