Week in Review: One Escaped Prisoner, Lots of Rain, and Some Football

A look at the notable events from the week of September 26 - October 3.

On Monday, we learned that a prisoner escaped from the Maryland State Police barrack in College Park, after having been arrested just hours earlier. Terrill Dwight Evans (no relation, I swear) was arrested on an out-of-state warrant, and was thought to be headed toward his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.

Old Town residents gathered Monday night to voice their collective irritation at the prospect of student housing to be erected where the Maryland Book Exchange currently stands. Attendees at the evening's meeting voted unanimously to encourage the city council to vote against allowing Zusin Development to convert the space into 335 apartment units. Councilwoman Stephanie Stullich (Dist. 3) said that she hopes the issue will come before the council sometime in October. Also on Tuesday, UMd. alumnus David Simon was awarded the McArthur "Genius Grant." Pretty cool.

In government news, a  proposal was introduced at Tuesday's city council meeting to lower the age at which a resident may run for College Park City Council from 21 to 18. Also, the council voted in favor of continuing the third year of the Shuttle-UM partnership with UMd., which enables up to 1000 residents to take the shuttle for free, despite low ridership and the $6000 cost to the city.

On Thursday, it rained. A lot. And on Friday, College Park prepped for UMd. versus Duke University's football contest, and on Saturday, the Terps triumphed over the Blue Devils 21-16. Huzzah!
