Week in Review: National Night Out, Crime, Education and More

A look at notable events from the week of Aug. 1 - Aug. 7

The week kicked off with National Night Out – a nationwide celebration that promotes community and safety. College Park hosted five separate National Night Out events, one in each neighborhood. Patch made it to almost all the events, and we have the photos to prove it.

The issue of safety remained the prevalent theme throughout the week. People on the street told Patch how safe they feel living in College Park, in light of such as citizen robberies and assaults. Unfortunately, a spate of weekend crime didn't do much to help: two separate citizen robberies occurred on Thursday and Saturday. Additionally, a motorcyclist died Sunday morning when he crashed into a barrier near MD-193.

In other news, Patch checked in on the University of Maryland's progress toward finding a new athletic director, as well as on the status of the opening of Ledo's Restaurant.

Wednesday's City Council work session featured a Q&A with College Park's two Prince George's County school board candidates and the unveiling of the past year's economic developments. For your convenience, Patch plotted the retail developments on a map to give a better idea of where things have opened and closed.
