Week in Review: Heat, Hite Discusses Budget Proposal and Hazardous Bike Lanes

A look back at the notable events of the past week.

Happy Sunday, College Park. We hope that you managed to stay cool during . The weather gurus say that a cool front is on its way—ah, relief.

On Sunday, four vendors selling fruit, vegetables, plants and pottery kicked off the city's first Farmers Market in downtown College Park. The market will be held each Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the end of summer.

On Tuesday, our parent columnist wrote about the importance of fostering self-reliance in our children and helping them to understand how to be a good leader. We also reported on the rise of lacrosse in Prince George's County. Could this mean a wider talent pool for UMd.'s nationally recognized lacrosse programs?

On Wednesday, William Hite Jr., superintendent of schools for Prince George’s County, was on hand at Tuesday’s worksession of the College Park City Council to discuss local problems and his budget proposal. The city council also discussed options for spending $174,774 to acquire property in 2012 from the state. It can use this money to buy open space or create parks on land the town already owns, and it must decide by June 17.

On Thursday, we reported on a D.C. bike blog's criticism of some of College Park's bike lanes, specifically Rhode Island Avenue near Hollywood Shopping Center, eastbound US-193 near Metzerott Road and Rhode Island Avenue near US-193. Do you agree?
