Week in Review: Early Voting, Rent Stabilization and the Introduction of Patch's Newest Feature

A look at the notable events from 8/29 - 9/5

Good evening, College Park! Are you enjoying your long weekend? I hope so.

There has been much to-do about early voting, which began on Friday. Maryland voters now have a full week to hit the polls, thanks to a law enacted this year with the intention of increasing voter turnout. It remains to be seen whether more days to vote will actually lead to more voting.

Police arrested two of the three suspects involved in a mugging in the parking lot of the Clarion Hotel last week, and the city rejected a proposal that would ease restrictions on the prices that landlords can charge for rent. College Park is moving forward with plans to get a skate park, and College Park Patch had a really long talk about bathrooms with Rich Abdill, the creator of the UMd. Bathroom Inventory.

Residents of Prince George's County aired their concerns about Pepco at a public meeting on Thursday, where officials from the company were on hand to answer questions and take notes on how to improve their service, in light of what many perceived as slow response times in the wake of July's severe storm. Also on Thursday was the Welcome Back Students event, a joint effort between the city, the university and the police, to bring law enforcement and students together in a non-official capacity.

Patch also unveiled its plans to begin a new project, called "About Town," which will take a slightly more lighthearted approach to the goings-on around College Park. We'll be posting twice daily, so make sure to check back periodically to make sure you stay on top of the action.
