Think Pink Today

Patch shares some ideas to celebrate National Pink Day.

It's about time pink gets some credit. The hue so often dubbed a faded red is more than that. It's the color of passion. 'Cause today it just goes with the fashion ... [Insert other silly lyrics from Aerosmith's song, Pink.]

Apparently, today is National Pink Day. But how does one celebrate a color? Patch makes a few suggestions:

1. Even if you don’t like pink, this is a holiday you can get into. Case in point: Strawberry Milkshake. Try this good-looking recipe from Tasty Kitchen. It's a celebration of pink, and of summer.

2. Donate. Even though National Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn’t until October, a variety of pink-donning foundations accept monetary gifts year round. Consider the Pink Ribbon non-profit, supporting international awareness and research of breast cancer; National Breast Cancer Foundation, which provides mammograms for women in need; or the National Breast Cancer Coalition, which educates breast cancer advocates to work toward the end of breast cancer by Jan. 1, 2020.

3. Listen to songs with the word “pink” in the title. Try these: Prince’s Pink Cashmere; Adrien Belew and David Bowie’s Pretty Pink Rose; and John Mellencamp’s Pink Houses. The videos are worth a watch. There doesn’t appear to be a single pink house in Mellencamp’s video, but he does do a few high kicks in a field of flowers. And you should probably give Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band a listen (Pink Cadillac), given the death this week of saxophone player Clarence Clemens. What are some of your favorite songs with the word “pink” in the title? Leave a comment.

4. Of course, wear pink. Don’t have anything pink? Today’s a good day to add it to your wardrobe. Order a pair of pink Old Navy flip flops for $3.50. (Sorry boys - girls only, unless you like Crocs.)

5. Help Patch to collect photos of all the pink in town today, whether it’s on you, in a storefront window, on your plate, or anywhere else unexpected. “Like” the College Park Patch Facebook page. Just above the status bar (it says “Write something...” in the box) click on the word “photo” and upload away. Be sure to include a caption.
