Rare Video of FDR in Wheelchair Found in College Park Archive

The clip was 'never meant to be shown to the world,' says the researcher who found it.

A brief but rare film clip of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a wheelchair was recently discovered at the National Archives' facility in College Park, the International Business Times reports.

According to the publication, Franklin College journalism professor Ray Begovich came across the footage, which was shot in Pearl Harbor in July of 1944.

In the clip, Roosevelt—seated in a wheelchair—is helped down a ramp aboard the U.S.S. Baltimore.

Roosevelt, who lost the use of his legs after contracting polio in 1921, went to considerable lengths to avoid being photographed or filmed in a way that would expose his condition.

The clip was "never meant to be shown to the world," Begovich told the IBT.
