Great Escape: Record Store Day

Records: Not just for the bearded 20-something set.

Occasionally, you get a solid block of "you" time. Take it. Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier - maybe a whole lot easier.

This week's Great Escape?

You don't have to be a flannel-covered hipster to get into the groove of Record Store Day. Perhaps your turntable is a legitimate relic of the '60s, and not a shamelessly faux retro knock-off available at a Target near you for the low, low price of $199 (also MP3 compatible!) Or maybe it is. Either way, if you like records, then this is your day.

In the area, one of your best bets for a family friendly record-scouting adventure is Red Onion in D.C., which the City Paper reports will likely have "snacks and treats for the kids." Remember, exposing your young to good music early may save you from years of saccharine glitter-filled pop concerts, so consider it an investment your future.

If you do choose to leave the kids at home, take advantage by heading up the street to Smash, where Pabst Blue Ribbon will be on hand to distribute beer and beer-themed swag. But be sure to bring back some souvenirs: sending your child to show and tell on Monday with the limited release Bad Brains 7-inch will make her the automatic victor of any playground spat.

In Baltimore, the stores Sound Garden, !El Suprimo!, Celebrated Summer, and Dimensions in Music will be participating, though which stores will have which test-presses and rarities will largely be a surprise. But record shopping isn't about cold-blooded efficiency. That's territory best left to iTunes. So relax, enjoy the day and see what treasures you can uncover from the dusty depths of a simpler time.

Record Store Day will be held on Saturday, April 16 at record stores nationwide.
