The many tornado warnings and watches swirling around the news may not make the prospect of leaving home (read: bed) very appealing. But chin up! The weather is forecasted to behave itself this weekend, and you surely don't want to miss all the great stuff going on around town.

It's time again for the University of Maryland's annual Maryland Day, a fun-filled open house showcasing all the university has to offer. Expect a cooking demonstration by UMd. alumna Joy Bauer, resident health expert on The Today Show, a book signing from alum Jeff Kinney, author of the series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, an opportunity to pet animals at the campus farm and informational booths galore. The event will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Parking on campus is free all day, and a bike valet will be at your service.

Do you like dogs? Do you like Patch? Then the Scrappy Hour is for you. Come out to Heurich Dog Park in Hyattsville on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and meet the editors of the Hyattsville Patch and the Riverdale Park - University Park Patch, plus Toby and Charlie, their furry, dog-shaped friends. Local vendors will be there to supply treats for both you and your dog, and you'll get all the Patch schwag you can carry.

On Sunday, Riverdale Park will host its annual celebration featuring local artists, vendors, musicians and food. There will also be workshops for making and playing musical instruments in collaboration with the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Queensbury Road at the MARC station.

 

Anyone and everyone is invited to the College Park Aviation Museum on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to create their own piece of aviation art. The museum will provide the supplies, and participants will have the option to enter their artwork into the museum’s .

 

The University Park Woman's Club's annual Spring Garden Tour will feature 10 houses around the community. Refreshments will be provided along the way, and native plants will be available for purchase. UPWC members will be on hand to coordinate a plant swap, so bring any spare bulbs or seedlings you think your neighbors might enjoy. The event is free, and will be held on Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Stop by the Riverdale Presbyterian Church to collect a map, and you're on your way.
