Dozens Rescued from Flooded Roadways Overnight

Drivers are warned to stay away from standing water on roads as more rain is predicted.

Swift water rescue teams and other emergency personnel assisted nearly three-dozen people who were stranded in floodwaters across the county overnight and early this morning, according to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department spokesman Mark E. Brady.

Heavy storms made their way through the area over night flooding many area roadways. The batches of people stranded in their cars in high water seemed to follow the path of the storms, Brady said.

“Throughout late last night and early this morning we were helping people out of situations where their cars were stranded by high water,” Brady said.

Emergency crews rescued nearly a dozen people from their cars in Bowie where multiple streets were flooded and impassable, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Brady said.

Around midnight the heaviest storms — and rescues — moved through the Brandywine area, making their way to Upper Marlboro and the Croom community around 12:30 a.m., Brady said.

“We had about two dozen [rescues] as of 2 a.m.,” Brady said, “and that went on through the night and into the morning.”

By 7:30 a.m. Thursday the department added approximately a dozen more to the number of people who needed assistance getting out of floods.

Brady warned motorists not to drive through standing water as more wet weather is predicted today.

“There is more rain in the forecast and with the floodwaters and high water in our creeks and streams, there is potential to overflow and flood the roads,” he said. “Drivers should stop, turn around and don’t go into those floodwaters. Some are getting through, but some aren’t. You don’t want to be one of those who don’t make it through."
