City, University Make Adjustments for Hurricane Irene

City Department of Public Works on call all weekend, students permitted to move in Friday.

The city and the University of Maryland are adjusting schedules in anticipation of tropical storm conditions set to peak in the area Saturday into Sunday.

College Park staff and the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety both said they are monitoring the forecast as Hurricane Irene rolls north.

College Park staff will be working through the weekend to provide damage assessment and debris management, Bob Ryan, director of public services said in an e-mail. He urges residents to call the public works office at 240-487-3590 throughout the storm to report downed trees and blocked roads.

The University of Maryland Resident Life is allowing students to move in on Friday ahead of the storm, adjusting its previous schedule for move in dates.

The university's Department of Public Safety said students can register for emergency information and warnings to be sent to their phones or email accounts by visiting www.alert.umd.edu.

PIO Marc Limansky said in an e-mail there if necessary the department will follow the university's Emergency Operation Plan and work in conjunction with other university departments to mitigate effects of the storm.

Current predications by the National Weather Service call for wind speeds Saturday evening that could reach between 30 and 40 miles per hour with gusts up to 45, and rainfall between 2 and 4 inches with possible flash floods.
