Cats Available for Adoption Saturday

At least 20 young shelter cats will be at adoption event at Mighty Healthy Pet.

About 20 to 25 young cats and kittens will be available for adoption this weekend at the Fittin' Kittens into Families event in College Park.

The felines, currently cared for at the College Park Animal Shelter and by foster families, are all spayed and neutered and up to date on shots, said Animal Control Officer Vivian Cooper.

Several of the cats that will be available for adoption are in the gallery above. The dates of birth are approximated.

If all goes according to plan, Cooper expects that families will be able to walk away from the event with their new pet. Those interested in adopting will be asked to fill out a contract and an application that must be approved by a panel. The panel will contact veterinary references and verify leasing rules in a home rental situation.

There is a , which goes toward expenses incurred to care for the cat before adoption. The suggested amounts are as follows:

  • one kitten younger than six months, $100;
  • one cat six months or older, $75;
  • two kittens younger than six months, $150;
  • two cats six months or older, $120.

On-site microchipping will also be available for a fee of $30. The microchip is a small device placed just below the cat's skin between the shoulder blades that emits a unique identification frequency read by special scanners. Owners register the cat online, and then animal rescuers who have the scanners are then able to identify where the cat came from and who the owners are.

"It's becoming relatively standard in the rescue world," Cooper said of the microchipping system, though in College Park, it's optional. She said she was able to contact the owners of a dog that traveled all the way from Silver Spring, MD, because it had a microchip.

Cooper advised that those wishing to adopt should purchase:

  • cat food;
  • two glass or metal bowls, one for water and one for food. (Plastic bowls will trap bacteria, Cooper said.);
  • cat litter pan. For kittens, Cooper suggests non-clumping litter, such as paper- or clay-based;
  • and a cat carrier.

The adoption event will take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at , 9815 Rhode Island Ave., College Park.
