5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 21

Little bites of news that you just can't live without.

Happy Tuesday, College Park. To quench your thirst for informative tidbits, here's today's list of five things you need to know:

1. Summer officially begins today at 1:16 p.m. It will certainly feel seasonal as the temperature is expected to reach 90 degrees, with a 30 percent chance of precipitation. The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year.

3. An incoming freshman and member of the women's soccer team at the University of Maryland has been named as an alternate goalkeeper on the Canadian national soccer team that will be competing at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup this summer. Rachelle Beanlands, of Ottawa, Ontario, is the youngest member of the national team. Wow, that's pretty cool—she's a Terp and a Canuck.

4. Gather round those of you who are unemployed or seeking a job change. The Hyattsville Busboys and Poets is hosting its final open house to interview prospective employees. It's your last chance, so head on over to 5331 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 104 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Good luck!

5. On this day in 1956, playwright Arthur Miller (The Crucible, Death of a Salesman) defied the House Committee on Un-American Activities and refused to name suspected communists. Miller's opposition to McCarthyism resulted in a conviction for contempt of court, which was later reversed by the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Happy summer solstice!
