5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 20

Little bites of news that you just can't live without.

Happy Monday, College Park. We hope that you enjoyed your weekend and are feeling ready for a new week. To help you kick off the week, here's today's list of five things you need to know:

1.The National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of showers before 1 p.m. Expect a cloudy day with a high near 79 degrees and a light wind around 8 mph. Better wet than a scorching 90+ degrees in the shade! Enjoy this day because we're looking at a short heat wave beginning on Tuesday.

2. Hey golf fans and non-golf fans (me), did you catch any or all of the U.S. Open over the weekend? Our hopes were dashed when didn't make the cut. But and endearing himself to fans around the world. Just want to give a shout-out to our Bethesda Patch site for doing a great job covering the tournament. Way to cover all the angles!

3. We know that some of you like to plan ahead, so here's a suggestion for a nice way to start your day on Wednesday mornings throughout the summer. The University of Maryland Arboretum and Botanical Garden will host early morning garden walks featuring both beloved and remote corners of the campus. This week's walk will highlight the landscape surrounding the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Meet at the front portico of the center on June 22 at 8 a.m. The walk will last approximately 45 minutes. For more information, contact Karen A Petroff at 301-405-3320.

4. Sunday marked the anniversary of Len Bias' death. The basketball player died of a cocaine overdose on the College Park campus. WTOP.com is asking readers to weigh in on whether or not Bias should be added to UMd.'s Athletic Hall of Fame. Read the story, leave a comment and participate in the poll.
