5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 4

Little bites of news you just can't live without.

Happy Fourth of July everyone! Here are five tips to get you through the hectic holiday:

1. College Park's Fourth of July festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with concessions serving hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, funnel cakes, snow cones and beverages. Classic rock band The Fabulous Hubcaps perform at 7 p.m., and the fireworks will begin around 9 p.m. Join the celebration at Lot 1 on the University of Maryland campus.

2. Be sure to take lots of pictures at this evening's celebration in College Park, because on Monday you'll be able to add them to the collection of photos gathered by Patch.

4. Oh no! You have that Fourth of July picnic later, and the procrastinator in you has left you with no idea of what to make. Can we recommend these good lookin' bald eagle desserts. Or how about simply throwing together some strawberries, bananas and blueberries into a fruit salad for your patriotic picnic contribution?

5. Hold your breath that the rain will hold off. Starting at 4 p.m., the forecast for College Park is calling for a 30 percent chance of precipitation. In the case of rain, the fireworks will shoot off on Tuesday evening instead.
