5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 13

Little bites of news that you just can't live without.

Happy Monday, College Park. We hope that you enjoyed your weekend and are feeling rejuvenated.

To help you kick off the week, here's today's list of five things you need to know:

1. We've got a gorgeous day on tap. The forecast is a beaut: sunny skies with low humidity and temperatures in the low 80s. If you have an opportunity, step outside and enjoy this late spring day.

2. Marc Bashoor, acting chief for the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department, was on ABC's Good Morning America early this morning talking about the dangers of ceramic fire pots that burn gel fuel. A live demo illustrated how quickly a T-shirt ignited from the flames of a burning pot.

3. This piece of news may make the day even brighter for some of you. According to NBC Washington, liquor stores in Prince George's County may soon be delivering spirits door-to-door. The county liquor board is considering giving residents the option of liquor delivery right to your front door. The public has an opportunity to weigh in at the June 28 liquor board meeting.

4. Students from the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering are one of three teams selected by NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to build potential habitats for astronauts, according to a UMd. press release. The winning habitat will be used during NASA's Desert Research and Technology Studies ("Desert RATS") field trials in northern Arizona in September. Go Terps!

5. On this day, June 13, in 1966, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Miranda vs. Arizona decision, creating the principle that criminal suspects must be advised of their constitutional rights prior to questioning by police—now considered standard police procedure. I learned something today. You too?
