5 Things You Need to Know This Weekend

Five easily digestible bits of news to get your weekend off right.

Happy Friday, College Park. About darn time, right? The weekend weather is predicted to be gorgeous, so prep your picnicking basket.

1. A developer responsible for the Greenbelt Metro project - a proposed 240-acre development near the Greenbelt Metro station - has pleaded guilty in association with Prince George’s County corruption scandal, the Washington Post reported Thursday. Daniel I. Colton, 61, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion and to make false statements to the Federal Election Commission.

2. The mega national news of the day is that Dr. Jack Kevorkian, (in)famous proponent of assisted suicide, died Friday morning after being hospitalized with kidney and respiratory problems off and on for several weeks. He was 83. Check out the obit on (Kevorkians's hometown) for more info.

3. Truckeroo - lame name, amazing concept - kicks off its season today in Southeast D.C. Truckeroo enables hungry food snobs around the Metro area to congregate around piles of lobster rolls, cupcakes, empanadas and more -- all served out of food trucks. And yes, double fisting is entirely acceptable.

4. Some good news for those who love cell phones and hate brain cancer: A group of UMd. researchers are questioning the validity of recent findings that radiation from cell phones has a negative impact on the brain.

5. The Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA) Bike Ride is going down on Saturday, starting at the former 94th Aero Squadron restaurant in College Park. We'll have more details for prospective riders later this afternoon.
