New Farmers Market Opens in College Park Saturday

Hollywood Farmers Market will open at 8 a.m.

After several weekends of test runs, the Hollywood Farmers Market will host its grand opening this Saturday.

More than 30 vendors are scheduled to set up stands at the market, which will be located at the Hollywood Shopping Center next to REI.

Janis Oppelt, a member of the Hollywood Farmers Market committee, said that the market, which is “resident organized, resident run” can become a meeting place for North College Park residents.

“We’re trying to make it not only a market, but an opportunity for a community gathering place,” Oppelt said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Guests include District 21 State Sen. James Rosapepe and District 1 County Councilwoman Mary Lehman.

Shoppers can expect fresh produce from Calvert Farms, SunSplash Farm, Pleitz Produce and Morning Glory Farm as well as free-range, chemical-free meat products from Legacy Farms and Ferguson Family Farm.

For those with a sweet tooth or a palate that prefers vegetables, Tiffany’s Oven offers vegan desserts, black bean burgers and spinach turnovers. Heavenly Created Desserts will sell gourmet goods made from scratch, too.

Savory selections at the market include stuffed pancake rolls from Eastern Delights and meats from Bill’s Backyard Barbeque.

Jewelry and crafts made by local artisans and sisters—Betty Gailes and Judith Freas— will also be for sale, including their bracelets, pendants, rings and earrings.

The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. To learn more about the Hollywood Farmer’s Market, visit http://www.hollywoodmarket.org or check out their Facebook Page.
