A View from the Varsity

Patch takes a tour of one of Baltimore Avenue's newest apartment complexes.

The Varsity at College Park apartments on Baltimore Avenue aren't set to open until the end of summer. But Patch got a preview of the behemoth 901-bed apartment complex that has been under construction since January 2010.

Leasing manager Wendy Wright calls the apartments "luxury living" for students: Not only will the dwelling sit atop the soon-to-open Looney's Pub and Bobby's Burger Palace (a new chain launched by Food Network superstar Bobby Flay), it also features such in-house amenities as a computer lab, extensive gym and tanning booths. Seriously.

But such a lavish lifestyle comes with a cost - rent generally runs upwards of $900 per student. But property manager Barbara Steinke said she's had no trouble filling the building with willing tenants.

"If you consider everything that's included, like utilities and things of that nature, it's actually in line with the area," she said.

She's right. The nearby University View apartments will also run between $900 to $1000 per person, without utilities. The Enclave will run between $950 and $1000 per person with utilities, but with a $25 cap on electricity. Mazza Grandmarc runs between $800 - $1645 per person, with utilities included.
