Of the roughly 4,000 weddings that happen in Prince George's County every year, about 70 of them are at Memorial Chapel, the centerpiece of 's campus.
"Most of them are alumni," said Janice Hawkins, who books the weddings. "They were here when they were students, and it’s a beautiful chapel."
The chapel is used for concerts, lectures, convocations and commencements, according to the UMd. website, but since July 1 last year, about 50 couples tied the knot there, too, Hawkins said. There are 35 more weddings scheduled between now and the end of June, but some weekends are still open for booking, Hawkins said.
Although there are no weddings scheduled for Valentine's Day this year—Memorial Chapel doesn't book weekday ceremonies—there was one the previous weekend.
