Great Escape: Greenbelt Park

Let Patch help you make the most of your me-time.

Occasionally, you get a solid block of "you" time. Take it. Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier - maybe a whole lot easier.

This week's Great Escape?

Sometimes you just want to get away from the noise and stress of everyday life. Maybe that squirrel in the backyard is the only nature you've seen in months. Luckily for College Park residents, the solitude of nature is metro accessible. Greenbelt Park (6565 Greenbelt Road) is just a few minutes from the College Park metro station.

Usually, convenient location equals high price, but not at this park.  $16 gets you a night of camping regardless of whether you arrive with an RV, tent or hammock. You may think that a location so close to civilization will impede your ability to commune with nature.  While the Beltway and Baltimore/Washington Parkway are nearby, their din will have a difficult time reaching you through all the leaves. Most people don't realize that when Thoreau wrote Walden, he was barely two miles away from town. It doesn't take a daunting road trip to find quiet solace.

So strap on your boots and spend a night in the forest, or just stop by for a visit. It's free to enter the park if you're not camping.
