On this day in 1813, the United States earned its nickname Uncle Sam, thanks to a meat packer named Samuel Wilson. He supplied barrels of beef to the Army during the War of 1812, stamping the barrels with "U.S." for United States, but soldiers started calling the food "Uncle Sam's."

A flash flood watch remains in effect through this afternoon. It'll be warmer today than Tuesday, but there is still a 100 percent chance of precipitation. Expect a high of 81 degrees, showers and possibly a thunderstorm ... contrary to the fact that today is apparently dubbed "Neither Rain Nor Snow Day."
