Week in Review: Police, Deandre Williams, Charter School, 'Zaching' and More

Here's a recap of local news from last week.

It was a good week for the University of Maryland Police department, who saw one man charged for a December armed robbery, and the arrest of a suspect in a recent cell phone theft.

There was more good news from the Prince George's County Police department, which announced this week the results of January's crime initiative: the seizure of 54 firearms, $100,000 worth of illegal drugs, and 551 arrests.

Deandre Ricardo Williams, the 24-year-old Hyattsville man charged for the murder of University of Maryland student Justin DeSha-Overcash, could see up to 60 years in prison. His plea hearing was Friday.

Three possible locations for a proposed public charter school in College Park were shared at this week's College Park Mayor and Council meeting, where councilmembers also reviewed a detailed site plan for M Square Research Park, and a property use agreement for Terrapin Turf, a venue to replace the Santa Fe on Knox Road.

The city attorney also said she anticipates the county planning board to adopt a resolution that approves plans for the Maryland Book Exchange student housing project. She said she would prepare an appeal on behalf of the city.

Have you heard about 'Zaching?' Everyone's doing it, from University of Maryland basketball coach Mark Turgeon to Ravens wide receiver and former Terp Torrey Smith. They're all showing support for a UMd. student battling cancer.

Mom Columnist Christa Schmidt shared a fantastic column about her daughter and a [dreaded] Barbie doll. Do you think a Barbie can influence a young girl's perspective of herself? Tell us here in the comments.

The bag tax bill for Prince George’s County won't be moving forward anytime soon, after the General Assembly voted last week to shelf the proposal.
