UPDATED: Man Charged in Dec. 11 Armed Robbery
It was the second armed robbery that occurred on campus in 2011.
Update, Feb. 6
A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with the Dec. 11 armed robbery at the Graduate Gardens Apartment Homes on Rowalt Drive.
Omiesam Nathaniel Ockiya, of Silver Spring, was charged on Tuesday for his involvement in the armed robbery against a University of Maryland graduate student, according to a police statement.
From the statement:
- Ockiya is charged with armed robbery, robbery, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, theft under $1,000, credit card theft, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
- Ockiya is currently incarcerated in Montgomery County for a separate violation.
- Police are still looking for a second suspect.
According to an electronic case search, Ockiya has been charged for past violations, including posession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with the intention to distribute, posession of paraphanalia and false statement to police, among others.

University of Maryland Police have obtained video of the suspect from the Dec. 11 robbery on Rowalt Drive.
Images were captured of the suspects using the victim’s credit card at a local convenience store. The three individuals depicted had potential involvement in the incident.
It was the second armed robbery on campus this year. These are the incident details, according to the police report:
At approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday, a male University of Maryland student was walking into his apartment building when he was approached by two males. One of them displayed a silver handgun and demanded property from the student, then the suspects fled.
The student was not harmed during the incident. He gave the following description of the suspects:
- 6-foot tall medium build African American male wearing a black hooded jacket
- 5-foot tall medium build African American male wearing a dark winter jacket and black ski mask
Detectives are asking for anyone with information about any of the individuals seen in the video to please call University of Maryland Police at 301-405-3555.

Maybe if the U of MD police spent more time patrolling the campus and less time making traffic stops, this sort of thing may not happen. I have observed them making stops in Adelphi as far as the old Ledo's location, along University Blvd, and in West Hyattsville to name a few. I was on the faculty of UMD for 10 years and rarely saw these police on campus. I guess there is more revenue in DUI arrests. I think that should be left to county police and the campus police should patrol the campus. Just my $.02

i, too, have always wondered why UMD police are allowed to make traffic stops off campus. i always see them on adelphi road near archives II, on adelphi south of 193, and other places not on campus. not sure how/why this is permitted.
