UMd. Chick-fil-A Petition Collects 850 Signatures

Students are seeking to have the chain removed from the university's College Park campus.

Some 850 people have signed onto a petition seeking to bar Chick-Fil-A from the University of Maryland's College Park campus, the Washington Blade reports.

The push follows comments made by Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy this summer against gay marriage, including the statement that people seeking to broaden the legal definition of marriage were "inviting God's judgment on our nation."

Cathy's remarks—as well as contributions made by the chain to groups that oppose gay marriage— and boycotts of the restaurant. Others have rallied around Chick-fil-A, defending the eatery's stances and dining at the restaurant in droves to show support.

Organizer Kyle Milligan, who posted the petition on Change.org, told the Blade that it was "totally inappropriate" to house the restaurant at UMd.'s Adele H. Stamp Student Union given its advocacy efforts.

Earlier this month, Stamp Student Union Director Marsha Guenzler Stevens told FOX 5 that Chick-fil-A would remain on site at least until the end of its contract, which lasts through December.
