Prince George's County police are investigating a shooting that started in the 4700 block of Lakeland Road in College Park Thursday night and ended in a massive police convergence at the McDonald's at 8301 Baltimore Avenue.
Police responded to a call of an armed subject on Lakeland Road around 10:30 p.m., PGPD Spokesman Cpl. Clinton Copeland told Patch. Police approached the suspect; a struggle ensued between the officers and the suspect and shots were fired.
Although Copeland said it was too early to confirm the details, the suspect eluded police custody, a chase began and everyone ended up a few blocks away at McDonald's near the University of Maryland campus.
"The campus was never on lockdown," Copeland reported, contradicting reports via Twitter.
Copeland said the suspect was shot before he arrived near the McDonald's. Although, a number of witnesses reported via Twitter that more than one suspect was involved, Copeland said there was only one suspect and he is now in police custody. The suspect was transported to a local hospital.
Copeland said no one else was injured because the police car involved in the incident crashed into a barrier along Route 1.
"[The car] didn't even make it to the parking lot," Copeland said.
According to The Diamondback, the University of Maryland student newspaper, students said they heard multiple gunshots fired and saw multiple police cars rushing to the scene at McDonald's. The restaurant is across the street from the University View Apartments.
