As a former columnist for College Park Patch, Joe Smith once wrote that our city was missing something important — a library.

While public libraries surround College Park, and the University of Maryland has several libraries where students and faculty can check out books, College Park does not have a public library. Smith is doing something about it.

He and a handful of volunteers are working to transform the basement of the College Park Church of the Nazarene in to a community library, filled entirely with donated books. Smith hopes it'll be open by January 2012.

If you're interested in volunteering your time to help get the library ready for opening day, to run or maintain the library or donate books, contact Smith and the other volunteers at 301-910-2433 or cpcomlibrary@gmail.com.

Thanks for the mention about the library -- we appreciate it! Just to be clear, the library will be housed in one room in the church's basement (the church is very active in the community, and other rooms are donated to other things, such as the community food bank). Thanks again. If folks want to get involved or have questions, they can contact us through our website: www.ncpinformant.com.
