VIDEO: Real Maryland Has a Disappointing Year
The pro soccer team practices at the College Park Community Center.
It's been a difficult season for the the Real Maryland Monarchs.
The team's 3-8-8 record leaves it ineligible for a playoff spot and at the bottom of the United Soccer League's Division II standings.
With one game left, the Monarchs, a professional soccer team that practices at the College Park Community Center on Pierce Avenue, hope to close the season with a win and a renewed sense of hope for next season.
"It's been a pretty tough season for us results wise," said midfielder Ben Hunter. "We're out of the playoffs, so it's been a disappointing year for us."
The last regular season match will be Saturday at Richmond City Stadium against the Richmond Kickers, who are 9-5-5 and playoff bound.
Real Maryland will be looking to improve their offensive game next season. After struggling to find the back of the net for most of this year, the team will look to Hunter, the team's leading scorer, and forward Jyler Noviello to continue to lead the offensive attack.
"The key for us is to play to our strengths," said head coach Anthony Hudson. "We've got some very good passing on this team, and we know how to create good opportunities. What has been nagging us is finishing some of these opportunities. Since it's the last game and the pressure is low for us, we should perform well."
The Real Maryland F.C. franchise has been in existence for three years. The team began practicing in College Park after its contract expired with Georgetown Preparatory School.
