[CRASH UPDATE]: Surratts Rd. Reopened 6 Hours After Fatal Crash

The crash forced the closure of Route 5 and Surratts Road on Thursday.

 

Update, 9 p.m.: Surratts Road was reopened nearly six hours after the road was shutdown Thursday afternoon after two cars were involved in a fatal car accident.

Prince George's Police Office Kevin Bowden died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Update, 6:05 p.m.: Two southbound lanes of Branch Avenue have reopened, but the northbound side remains closed as officials continue to investigate the cause of the accident. Surratts Road also remains closed about a mile out from the intersection with Route 5.

Police officers and officials are gathering at Southern Medical Hospital where the critically injured police officer was transported after the accident.

The female driver of the SUV was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Original Post, 4:25 p.m.: Police and EMS officials have shut down Route 5 and Surratts Road in both directions in Clinton due to an accident involving a Prince George's County police officer.

According to county officials, the crash occurred along Surratts Avenue at Branch Avenue just after 3 p.m.

The county police officer is critically injured and was rushed to a local hospital after his cruiser collided with a SUV before hitting a pole, NBC Washington reports.

Authorities described the accident as serious. Another person was also transported to the hospital, according to ABC7.

This is the second police-involved collision in two months. On Aug. 20, Off. Adrian Morris, 23, of Laurel died after his cruiser careened into a ditch off I-95 during a pursuit.

Delays should be expected this afternoon in Clinton and southern Prince George's County.

Wow I am so sorry that this officer dies. My prayers to his family. Puts things in perspective when we as commuters complain about delays.
