County Police Investigate Homicide in College Park

This marks the 11th homicide in the county in 11 days.

Update, 3:40 p.m.: University Police Chief David Mitchell said that though the university regularly investigates students suspected of using or selling drugs, the victim of Tuesday morning's homicide had never been investigated by campus police. However, Mitchell did express his regret that a student's life had been taken.

"It's sad whenever we lose one of our students, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it," he said.

Update: 2:52 p.m.: Prince George's County Deputy Chief Kevin Davis confirmed at a press conference that police received a call at 11:27 a.m. about a shooting that occurred on the 8800 block of 38th Avenue.

The victim, a 22-year-old student at UMd., was suspected to be dealing drugs, police said, and "his chosen lifestyle more likely than not contributed to this homicide."

The shooting occurred inside the house. Several others were also in the house at the time.

Davis said that the suspect fled on foot down 38th Avenue toward Metzerott Road, but that a vehicle description is not currently available.

He added that eight of the 11 of homicides in 2011 are thought to be drug related and that six of the 11 homicides happened indoors.

"This is not a random act," Davis said. "None of our homicides in 2011 have been random acts of violence. If you reside in Prince George's County, if you live in Prince George's County, and you're not engaged in a criminal lifestyle that gives people a reason ... to harm you...Prince George's County remains a safe community."

Davis would not reveal the identity of the victim.

At 2:33 p.m.: Prince George's County Police held a brief press conference at the scene of the crime. This marks the 11th homicide in the county in 11 days.

Last night, there was also a fatal stabbing in Langley Park at the 2400 block of University Boulevard.

At 2:19 p.m.: TBD reports that the victim was a 22-year-old University of Maryland student.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation during an attempted drug robbery, police said.

According to a release sent out by the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety, the gunman was a black male wearing dark clothes and a ski mask.

Original post, 1:29 p.m.: County police are looking into a shooting and possible homicide that occurred Tuesday afternoon near 38th Avenue and Metzerott Road in College Park.

A male has been transported to a medical center, and homicide investigators are en route to the scene. More information to come.
