More Cameras to be Installed at Greenbelt Metro Station

Security to increase at north College Park entrance.

Four cameras will be installed at the Greenbelt Metro station at the north College Park entrance by the end of the summer, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

The design proposal shows the cameras and two emergency call stations will line the footpath leading to the tunnel entrance of the station. There is already camera security inside the tunnel.

Dan Stessel, WMATA spokesman said the location for the increased security was decided on in response to lobbying by elected officials.

“[They were] all urging us to enhance safety at the station, and this is our response to  that," Stessel said.

In spring 2010, a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted near the footpath during daylight hours.

Fazlul Kabir, secretary for North College Park Citizens Association, spearheaded a petition effort a few months later to get more security cameras installed. More than 300 people signed the online or hardcopy petition, .

Kabir posted on his personal blog after learning that the cameras would be placed near the footpath: "This exciting news shows an example how residents and City officials can work together to make something good for the community," he wrote.

Stessel said the higher security will be funded through the capital improvement program, a $5 billion, six-year program funded by Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia and the federal government.
