Metro Testing New Bike Storage Facility at College Park

Metro will open the Bike & Ride service to the public next month.

Metro is now testing a new bicycle parking facility at the College Park Metro station, ahead of the public opening for a new Bike & Ride service next month.

The facility is an enclosed parking structure with space to lock up more than 100 bikes, according to WMATA's website. The service is provided by BikeLink, a temporary storing system for small vehicles.

Riders will need a personal access card to enter the enclosed 2,400 square-foot room on the first level of the parking garage.

There is a one-time $5 charge for new customer ID verification, but bike parking will cost 2 to 5 cents per hour, depending on the time of day, with no monthly or annual fees. (Learn more about purchasing a card here or call 888-540-0546.)

During the testing period, Metro is looking for comments about the facility and service. You can learn more about using the facility here, where there is also a Q&A. Fun fact: If you’re soon traveling to the West Coast with your bike, you can use your BikeLink card out there, too.

I'm excited to see how this turns out. I wish the facility could have been placed on the west side of the Metro to make it more convenient for those travelling to campus.

Already bought and activated the card. I've dumped the $200 annual cost for a Metro bike locker (up from $75 a year) and am committed to the new BikeLink. Hopefully you'll see my shiny silver bike there more than you'll see my car.
