Fishnet to Open Coffee Shop Later This Year

Owner Ferhat Yalcin says shop will serve lattes, cappuccinos

Fishnet——is set to open a coffee shop next door later this year, according to owner Ferhat Yalcin.

Yalcin says the café will occupy the approximately 800-square-foot space next to , located at 5010 Berwyn Rd.

The coffee shop is the brainchild of Yalcin, who saw a business opportunity for a locally-owned coffee shop in College Park.  As of now, he says, the only options are larger chains like and , which are an inconvenient drive from Berwyn.

“There’s no coffee shop around here,” he said.  “And there are no independent coffee shops, either.”

Others have doubts about a coffee shop located blocks away from downtown College Park, questioning whether a new café will stand up to the more popular coffee shops in the city.

“I would go check it out,” Kayleigh Mencia, a College Park resident who lives near the restaurant, said.  “However, Starbucks will always be my first choice unless it's jam packed.”

In spite of naysayers, Yalcin is working hard to make sure his new venture succeeds.  While he’s is still tossing around names for the shop, he knows for certain that the café will feature both artisan coffees like lattes and cappuccinos, as well as more traditional drip coffee.

The preliminary stages now include fiddling with different sorts of coffee and menu items to make sure his new venture is successful.  He says members of his already bustling staff will shift to the new coffee shop to ensure the café is fully staffed.

"If this coffee shop is run anything like how Fishnet is run, it will be a first class establishment," President Kevin Young of the Berwyn District Civic Association said.  "It will give an anchor in our community for people to gather."
