One Dead, Two Injured in Route 1 Accident

Prince George's County police are investigating the crash in College Park.

Prince George's County police are investigating a car accident in College Park that left one man dead and two others injured early Sunday.

A 21-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, was traveling northbound in the 9200 block of Baltimore Avenue when Bernard Coatley Jr., 40, attempted to make a left turn from Delaware Street, but failed to yield, according to PGPD Cpl. Larry Johnson.

The cars collided and Coatley Jr. was killed, Johnson said. The 21-year-old driver and one 32-year-old passenger in that car have non-life threatening injuries, but the other 25-year-old passenger was not injured.

Prince George's County police were investigating the cause of the accident, but suspected alcohol and speed played a factor, Johnson said.

I heard that it happened around 3:30 this morning and as of 8:30 Route 1 was still totally closed while they wrapped things up and took the remains of the vehicles away. There was still accident debris late this afternoon and I suspect that the reenactment spray paint forensics will remain for some time. You can't drive through the area without realizing that something very significant, and probably very high speed, happened.
