Everything You Need to Know About Veterans Day in College Park

A digest of ceremonies, city services, transportation, and everything in between.

 

This Thursday, veterans are being honored in various ways around College Park.  Here's a list of the goings-on around town:

Ceremonies:

A Veterans Day memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in College Park, located at the corner of Route 1 and Greenbelt Road. Afterward, attendees are invited to a luncheon at the American Legion Post 217, located at 9218 Baltimore Ave.

The University of Maryland will honor veterans associated with the university at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel on campus. University President Wallace Loh will present opening remarks, and three speakers will share their experiences in the military. Two musical performances will follow, and the celebration will conclude with the dedication of the new Garden of Remembrance and Reflection and refurbished Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Volunteers from the university's Air Force ROTC unit will hold a vigil outside the chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Participating restaurants:

Applebees will be offering a free meal to veterans and active duty personnel. Identification is required (includes U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement, Veterans Organization Card, photograph in uniform or wearing uniform.)

With the purchase of two one-pounds bags of packaged coffee, Dunkin' Donuts, located at 9701 Baltimore Ave., has committed to send a free one-pound bag to the United Service Organizations (USO) until Nov. 14. Additionally, the store is offering a free medium cup of hot coffee to service members every Tuesday throughout the month of November.

Services:

All government offices, including College Park City Hall, Davis Hall, Youth and Family Services, will be closed.

Prince George's County schools, including Paint Branch Elementary and Hollywood Elementary, will be open. However, county schools will be closed Friday for parent-teacher conferences.

There will be no mail delivery. 

The Metro will operate on a modified schedule, running 5 a.m. until 12 a.m.

There will be no parking fees in Prince George's County.
