D.C. Man Arrested in 'Gang-Related' College Park Shooting
Edwin Morales, 20, faces first- and second-degree murder charges.
Authorities say a Washington, D.C. man was arrested Friday and charged with fatally shooting 20-year-old David Esequel Avelar last month in College Park.
According to Prince George's County police, Edwin Morales, 20, of the 3300 block of Monterey Ln. SE was taken into custody in northwest D.C. He faces first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges.
On Feb. 24 at around 4 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 9100 block of Baltimore Ave. in College Park. When officers arrived, they found Avelar suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
According to police, the shooting occurred when a fight broke out between two groups of people in a hotel parking lot. During the altercation, Morales allegedly shot Avelar.
Police believe the killing was gang-related.
As of Sunday afternoon, Morales was awaiting extradition to Prince George's County.
