Beginning May 21, 2012, Smart Lunch, Smart Kid – with the help of local volunteers – will provide 400 healthy meals every weekday and educational enrichment opportunities to Tri-Cities area children in need during the summer.
The program is similar to Meals on Wheels, except that the lunches are delivered to children who receive free- and reduced-price lunches during the school year
Nutritious sack lunches will be delivered to Tri-City area children who live in apartment complexes, housing projects, and mobile home communities.
SLSK will operate out of College Park First United Methodist Church (3726 East Main Street
College Park 30337).
How Can I Help?
There are a number of ways to make a huge difference in your community through SLSK. Here are just a few. We need…
Lunch Makers: These volunteers pledge to make x number of lunches on agreed upon dates. They will deliver the lunches to College Park First UMC where they will be refrigerated and delivered the next day. Lunch makers assume the financial cost of preparing the lunches as a part of their volunteering efforts.
Lunch Checkers/Packers: These volunteers pledge to staff the College Park First UMC kitchen from 9am-11am on agreed upon dates. They will check the quality of the lunches and pack them for delivery.
Drivers: These volunteers serve in 2-person teams, pledging to deliver lunches from 10:45 am-2pm on agreed upon dates. They will pick up the lunches from College Park First UMC and an SLSK car decal to deliver the food to specified drop-off sites in the community. Drivers assume the cost of gas and use of their car as part of their volunteering efforts.
Kitchen Managers: These volunteers pledge to oversee operations in the kitchen from 9am-2pm on agreed upon dates. They will “cover” the program director when her/his duties demand leaving the host site, managing the kitchen and making sure things run smoothly.
Thanks for your support!
